The Peeblean Midweek Extra: Tuesday 14 January 2025
Not all heroes wear capes, but often they're in high viz and helmets...
We’ve spent a lot of this week watching the progress of Tim Darlow, a member of Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue, who is running the 160 mile Montaine Spine Challenge North. At the time of writing, he is 34 hours into the race and currently in sixth place.
Tim is raising money for Water Aid and TVMR and you can still chuck him a few quid for choosing an endurance race that involves 16 hours of darkness each gruelling day.
If you need a further incentive, TVMR responded to 81 callouts in 2024.
If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to volunteer for mountain rescue, there’s an opportunity to hear from Steve Penny - who has clocked up 35 years with TVMR - on Wednesday 29 January. Steve will be in conversation with Stewart Wilson (the Tweed Valley Blogger) at Durty Brewing in Innerleithen. The chat starts at 19:00 and the £10 ticket includes a beer and a pie.
Mountain views from a comfortable seat will be on offer at the end of the month when the Wild Writer’s Festival returns to Peebles for five days (22-26 January). Stewart Wilson has highlighted his recommendations from the programme which includes events at the Eastgate Theatre, Milne & Pickles, Neidpath Castle, the Park Hotel and the Cross Keys. One event includes an invite to a cold water swim afterwards…
Local running events and clubs
A journey of 160 miles starts with a single step. If you’re considering getting back into a bit of running then the women’s running group JogPeebles are starting up their Couch to 5k sessions – the first run is on Saturday 18 March at 09:00 from Kingsmeadows car park.
On Sunday 19 January, Scurry Events are hosting a trail event at Vogrie with 10km, 5km and 1.6km family fun run options.
On Sunday 26 January, Elliot’s Fun Run is a charity fundraiser with a 2k, 5k or 10k option, starting and finishing at Linton Hotspur FC, West Linton at 10:30.
On Sunday 9 February there’s an orienteering fundraiser for TVMR near Melrose around the Eildon Hills and woodlands. With courses for all ages and experiences, this is a great family activity. Entry fees are £3-£6.
Glentress Trail Races take place on Sunday 16 February with a 10k, half and full marathon option.
Haylodge Parkrun is a three-lap 5k every Saturday morning at 09:30.
Moorfoot Runners is Peebles’ local running club with adult and junior sections. Many of their members run competitively but there’s plenty social running too.
We’ll be back on Friday with the full weekly digest of what’s going on in Peebles and around over the next two weekends.
